As the heelside of my snowboard starts gripping the terrain, i feel the ice crunch under the silver sharp edge of my burton feelgood. The instant feeling of unease moves through my body, that feeling of loosing control and becoming completely at the mercy of the mountain. Trying to maintain my balance and contradict the forces of ice, wind, and gravity that are pulling me down, i lean back and hope for the best. Sure enough, the more i lean back, the harder my edge digs in, which in a normal circumstance would be sufficient to stop me, but on ice, this only stimulates the speed at which my board slips out from under my body, and i crash into the mountain side (located at the cross). Just like the old adage goes, “dust yourself off and get back on the horse,” in this particular case a snowboard. With the first fall behind me, I’m comfortable now, ready to ride, and no longer timid towards the mountain.
